What does it mean to be a member of the Michigan Gem & Mineral Society?

Membership privileges include eligibility to participate in all club activities. Non-club members and the general public may attend our annual gem and mineral show which is held the third weekend in March each year. Other privileges include:

  • Subscription to the MGMS newsletter
  • Participation in field trips
  • Participation in silent auctions, raffles and drawings at Club events
  • Participation in the Handicrafters special meetings (for members who like to make stuff, or want to learn)
  • Board Member Elections
  • Participation in meetings, summer potlucks, & annual Christmas Party
  • Free lunch and t-shirt for annual show volunteers

The best part of being a member is hanging out with your fellow rockhounds and fossil collectors! We are always learning from one another. Our club is a diverse group with everyone from novice collectors to experienced experts. We learn from one another, have a great time on the field trips, and of course planning and participating in our annual show is a blast! Many of our members are also crafters, and we have special "Handicrafters" meetings to get together and make raffle prizes for the annual show, gifts for meetings and potlucks, and just having fun making stuff in general.

What does it cost to become a member of MGMS?

Annual dues are $15 for adults or $20 for a family. Adults are 17 years or older. Family is all members living under same roof. Membership renewals are due on March 25 of each year.

Where and when are your meetings held?

Club members will receive email with Zoom meeting login info.
We do not make Zoom details public for IT security reasons.

With the exception of the summer potlucks, meetings are held at the Leoni Township Hall, 913 5th St., Michigan Center, MI 49254.

  • Spring: Second Thursday of each month, 6:30 pm (Apr and May)
  • Summer Potlucks (in lieu of meeting): June & July (locations TBA)
  • Winter: Second Saturday of each month, 1:00 pm (Sep, Oct, Nov, Jan, Feb, Mar)
  • December Christmas Party Meeting - Second Saturday at Noon

Our Handicrafters group meetings are usually scheduled about a month in advance, and announcements are made at the meetings. We'll also update the info on the web site when Handicrafter meetings are scheduled.

If I become a member, do I have to attend all meetings?

No, it is not required that you attend the meetings. However, this is a big part of the fun of being in the club! We strongly encourage you to come to the meetings so you can participate in the discussion, hear about upcoming events, and participate in the various activities that happen at each meeting.
